Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The whales have been making a spectacular appearance lately. You don’t need to go on a special whale watching excursion just look towards the ocean for a free show. To the point that participants in the Free Sculpture tour along the Malecon hosted by Gary Thompson of Galeria Pacifica were distracted by the whales breaching. Gary joked “hey the sculpture tour is free the whales are $20 dollars”

The yearly visits by these amazing creatures is just one of the amazing natural assets of Puerto Vallarta which is one of the most significant zones of Bio diversity in Latin America. From the amazingly prehistoric looking iguanas to over 300 species of orchids. There are Blue Footed Boobies a species of birds found only in the Galapagos Islands and in the Marietas islands off the point of the Puerto Vallarta Bay near Punta Mita.

There are wild parrots and in at a certain time of the year flocks of Monarch Butterflies. There are stories of wild jaguars in the jungle long ago but the arrival of man changed that. There are still many deer and even squirrels which you expect to be in a more northern climate. Other animals include raccoons and some more exotic local species of a possum like animal. Besides the green Iguanas there is a grey spinier looking type of iguana called a Garobo by locals, and there are crocodiles.

The ocean is also teeming with life, from the magnificent Blue and Black Sailfish to Tuna and the small species such as Red Snapper and Dorado.

As well Puerto Vallarta is well known for being the home of 5 species of Sea Turtles most of them sadly on the list of endangered species although impressive efforts are being made by locals to protect the turtles and preserver some of the beaches where they lay their eggs in the sand. As well Dolphins love the Bay of Banderas Puerto Vallarta area and are often seen jumping and playing, some of the local species are bottlenose and Spinner dolphins
