The 2012 Tourism Tianguis to be held in the Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit area. The word Tianguis means an open air market, however this Tianguis is all about Tourism. The Tianguis Turistico or Tourism Tianguis is one of the most significant global tourism related events and Mexico’s largest tourism trade show. The fact that the very important Tianguis Turisiticas are being held in Puerto Vallarta in 2012 is a move to promote different destinations in Mexico.

The Tianguis have been held in Acapulco for the last 36 year, however this year the Mexican Ministry of Tourism announced that it would break with tradition in order to promote different regions of the country starting with 2012 being held in the Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta. The slogan for the 2 areas is “Two destinations a single paradise” and this is a major coup for the area and shows an impressive teamwork of the 2 tourism offices.

The Tianguis Turístico is being held in the Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Punta Mita area but is a platform to promote all of Mexico’s vacation destinations: our fantastic beaches, quaint villages and chic cities to a very specific local and international market, with the purpose of leading to the growth of visitor destinations, products and services for the tourism sector.

However having the Tianguis here is a fabulous exposure for the region that also includes Punta Mita, Nuevo Vallarta, San Pancho, Sayulita and the Banderas Bay.

Here some interesting statistics about the 2011 Tianguis Turistico:

On their past edition Tianguis represented a direct impact of 2.9 billion pesos for Acapulco´s economy
Hotel occupancy sold out in Acapulco over the Tianguis Touristicos weekend thanks to this single event.
16,000 business meetings were realized during 2011 event.

One of the 2012 Tourism Expo’s biggest benefits will be that of publicly promoting both Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit; an estimated $76 to 100 million pesos are expected to be generated by the upcoming event.

Everyone in the local tourism industry, from hotels and restaurants to big businesses and small family-owned operations, are committed to working effectively towards putting our collective "best foot forward" for the 2012 Tourism Expo.

Puerto Vallarta Mayor Salvador Gonzélez Reséndiz attributed the achievement of being chosen as the host destination for this important event to the recent outpour of infrastructure improvements throughout the city. He went on to say that the Malecón reconstruction will be finalized by the time Vallarta hosts the Tianguis, an added bonus that showcases the city's new image.

Local official Ramón Guerrero, also chimed in on the emotional festivities, thanking the local and state authorities for their continued support and work towards achieving shared recognition for Jalisco and Nayarit. He went on to say that Vallarta shall go forward on a path of continuing development and success.

Just days before the official announcement, Tourism Secretary and CANACO President Carlos Gerard Guzmán expressed his confidence in Puerto Vallarta as the next host for Mexico's largest Tourism Expo.

As for Nayarit, Governor Ney González too expressed his great excitement at the news that Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta were named 2012 Tourism Expo hosts; historic because 2012 will mark the first time in 35 years that the Tianguis Turistico will be held outside of Acapulco.
