Puerto Vallarta’s history was forever changed by Elizabeth Taylor more so then all the other Hollywood with the exception of John Huston.  Puerto Vallarta was the quintessential sleepy fishing village until 1964, when iconic movie director John Huston fell in love with Puerto Vallarta and chose Mismaloya to film Night of the Iguana on location.  Timing is everything and at this time rumors were just starting about the affair between Taylor and Burton.  Elizabeth came to Vall

The paparazzi followed the couple and could not get enough of their romantic and often tumultuous relationship.  Richard Burton bought Elizabeth the famous Casa Kimberly as a surprise gift for her 32nd birthday in February 1964 just a few months after the filming of Night of the Iguana ended and barely a month before they go married.

So Puerto Vallarta mourns the passing of one of their family with a memorial service on Sunday March 27th at the famous Los Arcos amphitheater in front of the Cathedral of Guadalupe. A small memorial has been set up at the Seahorse statue along the Malecon with a photo of Taylor as she was during her years in Vallarta with flowers and candles...

Taylor passed away in Los Angeles on March 23, 2011 and one of the most significant comments was that her life was more amazing and exciting than any of her movies.

She was a legend more for her amazing beauty, her many marriages, her jet set lifestyle, charitable projects and the famous people who were her friends, from James Dean to Michael Jackson.

A few years after they married Burton purchased a 2nd house across the street from Casa Kimberley and had a bridge built connecting the houses along the upper level with a replica of the famous “Rialto” bridge in Venice Italy.  The bridge was painted pink and exists still as a romantic memory of the couple’s time in PV.  Apparently when they disagreed Burton was sent across the bridge to stay alone in his house until they made up.

After Burton died in 1990, Taylor sold the 2 villas saying it was too sad to spend time there.

Now almost 50 years later the interest has not diminished for these very famous and romantic lovers.  The town of Puerto Vallarta remembers them well and on March 27th locals and visitors are invited to be present for  a traditional La Velada Luctuosa (sorrowful evening) in memory of Elizabeth Taylor, who was not only a great actress but also one of Vallarta's greatest promoters.

This will be the beginning of several events to honor the memory and demonstrate the towns continuing gratitude for her generous contributions to the image and development of Puerto Vallarta.

The program will included presentations by local musicians and poets, and a speech by Elizabeth Taylors godchild, local boy now well known photographer Sergio Toledano. Images of the actress during her time here in Puerto Vallarta will be projected and white balloons will be released during a moment of silence.

If you are in Vallarta you will want to attend the homage to Elizabeth Taylor, and sign the book of condolences that will be placed on the walkway in front of City Hall.
