February is the shortest month of the year but in Puerto Vallarta it is one of the busiest. February is also the most popular months for foreign Tourism from the US and Canada, probably as it is a perfect half way point to break up a snowy northern winter.Also February means Valentine’s day – what better way to show your sweetie you love them then a getaway to sunny Puerto Vallarta.

The biggest surprise was the visit from the president of Mexico – Felipe Calderon to Puerto Vallarta, as part of a plan to promote tourism to Puerto Vallarta and other popular Mexican resorts. The President stayed overnight at the Resort Vela’s Vallarta as part of a tour of several resorts to encourage potential visitors to Mexico and show them there are no safety concerns.

While he was in Puerto Vallarta the president walked the Malecon from the famous landmark the Seahorse statue all the way to the Hotel Rosita. As well the President drove south and spent a couple hours with CBS correspondent Peter Greenburg to film a TV special promoting Mexican tourism. They filmed the President and his 3 children and Peter Greenburg on the thrilling zip lines of the

Los Veranos Canopy Tour. I am especially impressed about this as one of the zip lines called the Black Diamond is 500 ft over a river rapids and approx 1400 ft long so it is a thrilling ride and not for the weak of heart. The President and his family did not even hesitate and seemed to love it!

The President also visited Punta Mita and went surfing! Maybe he and President Obama can talk surfing next time they meet.

Speaking of surfing if you have seen the new popular sport of paddle surfing or Paddle Boarding coming to the area. If you want to try it you can take lessons with Pacific Paddle Surf a relatively new company owned and operated by Adam and Veronica Finer. They take you to Bucerias or a calmer beach to take lessons and include complete packages.

The upgrades for the downtown historic zone are moving very well and most sidewalks and planters are complete as well as the addition of small red tile roofs instead of awnings to keep a colonial style to this historic center near the Mercado Market and the Cathedral of Guadalupe.

The Romantic Zone improvements are also getting closer to completion with the sidewalks on Basillio Badillo more or less complete to the cross street of Ignacio L. Vallarta, The sidewalks are spacious and newly done so no cracks or holes to trip the unsuspecting pedestrian – now you can check out the scenery or people watch. The Planters along this area are also ready and the Puerto Vallarta Garden Club is involved in the project of filling them and planting some great tropical flowers.

The old Pier on Los Muertos Beach is almost completely demolished and construction on the new pier will begin soon.

There are a couple of new sculptures along the Malecon to add to Gary Thompson of Galleria Pacifico’s weekly sculpture tour. Gary told me the tour has become an amazing success with groups of over 80 persons some days.
