The month of December and the year 2010 ended in style, New Years Eve 2010 was a spectacular send off. These continued improvements such as wider sidewalks, additional plazas and micro parks with sitting areas make Puerto Vallarta even more of town made for people not cars and buildings. It is a perfect setting to encourage strolling and exploring. Many restaurants are adding a few tables along the sidewalks so you can stop and have a coffee, some tacos or a cocktail and enjoy some world class people watching. In any 30 minute period along a typical Puerto Vallarta sidewalk you can see a range of people from celebrities to simply interesting bohemian types, as PTO. Vallarta tends to attract diversity of travelers.

From street parties such as the “South side Shuffle” a regular event every other Friday night from 6-10 pm to showcase the amazing group of galleries and stores along a short 2 block area of Basilio Badillo in the famous Romantic Zone to the sidewalk cafes and stands selling everything from table clothes to tacos this is a town that lives outside. The locals have long embraced this custom sitting on their stoops in the evenings and chatting with neighbors and passersby, because everyone seems to know each other – because it is such a friendly town.

The local culture considers it if not rude at least very standoffish not to great everyone even strangers –except on busy streets of course. So join in and you will find the responses very warm and friendly.

It is no surprise that a range of walking tours have developed from the energetic – Tours de Jour a power walking tour of the hidden streets of Puerto Vallarta to the more relaxed stroll along the Malecon with information about all of the sculptures hosted by Gary Thompson of Galeria Pacifica .

The Festival of Guadalupe which starts on December 1^st thru the 12^th is a wonderful insight into the culture of Mexico and the strong social connection of the local people. The downtown streets are closed for several hours each day and the grand finale is almost 24 hours of Perigranaciones (pilgrimages) to the Cathedral in the center of town and a huge fireworks display. The Bells of the church tower ring constantly and it is a glorious celebration with food stands filling the main plaza and streets around the Cathedral with locals and visitors enjoying the special time of year. If you have not been to Puerto Vallarta at this time of year it is a perfect time to enjoy the cultural aspects of Mexico and have a sunny beach vacation as well.
