GOLF IN VALLARTA AND RIVIERA NAYARIT Puerto Vallarta has evolved through many extremely varied lifestyles from the sleepy fishing village to the glamourous Hollywood destination and is know becoming known as a premier golf destination. It all started in about 1989 when the first golf course Los Flamigos at the Flamingos Hotel was built in Nayarit state between Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerias. It took about 20 years for the course to be renovated and reopened to compete with the many other options. The next course to be built was Marina Vallarta and in time additional courses were added. One of the more famous being the one at Punta Mita designed by Golf legend Jack Nicklaus, he went on to design one of the Vista Vallarta courses as well were the World Golf Championship was played in December 2009. The 2^nd of the two courses at Vista Vallarta was designed by Tom Weiskopf.

The Punta Mita golf course has become somewhat famous for the optional par-3 hole with the tee on the mainland and the green located on a small natural island located approx 194 yards off the coast. However the rest of the course boasts 8 holes with ocean views and other views of a natural lagoon, with amazing indigeonous flora and fauna.

The next addition was the El Tigre Golf Course designed by Robert Von Hagge, located in the Nuevo Vallarta area as part of the Paradise Village Resort. Know to be very challenging even by professionals – El Tigre has traps in 13 of the 18 holes. The other in the area is the Mayan Palace golf Course, designed by Jim Lipe is known as being an encounter with Nature at its best and a unique challenge. The reward being an amazing panoramic view of the Bay of Banderas from the 18^th hole.

To the south approx 2 hours drive are El Tamarindo Golf Course which as been rated “The best hidden link in the world” by many golf magazines and publications. Said to rival some of the top golf course in the world, El Tamarindo features jungle settings, 3 oceanfront holes and 9 holes with breathtaking views of beaches.

Slightly further south is Isla Navidad Golf Course considered one of the lushest golf courses in the world. With its 27 holes offering views of the ocean, mountains and lagoon it has to be seen to be believe In Manzanillo, you’ll find La Mantarraya Golf Course at Las Hadas, which is considered one the best golf resorts in Latin America, featuring wide fairways and 11 water holes including #18, an Island green built on the ocean
